Shinnyo-en conducted its annual Lantern Floating Ceremony on Lake Kawaguchi, near Mt. Fuji, in the month of August. Participants came to the ceremony from around the Tokyo area in the late afternoon, prepared their lanterns, and set them afloat at sundown to the accompaniment of traditional Buddhist Shomyo Choir chanting.
In Japan, a lantern floating ceremony is part of the traditional end-of-summer Obon festival, a time in which people respectfully remember and pray for deceased loved ones and family members.
To mark the significance of remembering those who have gone before us, members from Shinnyo-en Singapore will also hold a mini lantern floating in the compound of our temple. Please feel free to join us in this symbolical moment, you may download the PDF flyer for more information.
