There are many kinds of services held at Shinnyo-en. Among them are what we call “Merit Transfer Services.” Merit transfer in Sanskrit is parinama, which literally means “to transfer.” In Buddhism, it is believed that one can accumulate merit through altruistic deeds, which can then be shared, or transferred, to others. The positive effects of doing so can then reach oneself as well as others. When Buddhist ideas were introduced to Japan, the idea of merit transfer was integrated with traditional customs of ancestral veneration. Today, many Buddhist communities conduct merit transfer services in which rites are conducted to pray for and console the departed. Ullambana is one such service.
