Kyodoin was born on July 29, 1934, as Tomofumi Ito, the first son of the Shinnyo Parents, Masters Shinjo and Tomoji. Master Shinjo was still working as an aeronautical engineer and the Itos were leading a comfortable life. On February 8, 1936, when Kyodoin was 18 months old, the Shinnyo Parents embarked on a religious path. While they had already been dedicating their spare time to helping others, Master Shinjo began to engage even further in religious training. In his brief life, Kyodoin, toddler though he was, supported the Shinnyo Parents in their efforts, even to the extent of helping practitioners towards self-reflection.

This service marks Kyodoin’s birth together with our monthly homa service. On this day, after the monthly fire homa ritual (usually held on the 28^th of every month), a special ceremony will be conducted to honor Kyodoin and the foundation that he laid for the Shinnyo Path.

SAITO HOMA is an outdoor fire ritual originating in asectic practices. The ritual implements and ceremonial robes used in saito homa rites contain certain esoteric meanings and are reminiscent of how ascetics created ritual spaces in the mountains to train.

At Shinnyo-en, the symbols of fire and water are brought together in hope and healing. Our services express the wish of founding Master Shinjo, who explained in October 1985 as follows:

“My sincere hopes are that we can realize a future where all can live out their full potential and, as every form of life is interconnected, our humble efforts will build one upon another to benefit every corner of the earth.”

Autumn Higan Service 2018

We would like to invite everyone to join us in our Autumn Higan Service, one of the Merit Transfer Service held at Shinnyo-en to transfer our positive merits/energy to our love ones and those who departed before us.

This traditional ritual held on the equinox is called “higan” in Japanese Buddhism, coming from the Sanskrit word paramita, which means “crossing over to the other shore.” The “other shore” refers to a complete state of awakening, a realm or state of mind of true happiness, or nirvana. At Shinnyo-en, we conduct this with the wish to transfer the merit (positive energy) that we create walking on the Shinnyo Path to all those who came before us—including our loved ones and those who died in conflicts and natural disasters.

Although the ceremony is held for those who have passed on, it also benefits us who live in the present, as well as all in the future to whom we are linked. The deep meaning of this ceremony lies in sharing the power that comes from the wisdom and loving compassion of awakening. The force of our efforts extends beyond the boundaries of time and space in all directions, so that both we and the various souls we remember can cross over to the shore of happiness together.

Grand Homa in Shinchoji’s 80th Year

As part of the events to commemorate 80 years since the founding of our sangha’s first temple, on October 6, a grand homa will be held at Shinchoji at our sacred site of Oyasono. In Singapore, we will broadcast the video on October 6 @ 3pm.

Even before their enshrinement of the Mahavairochana Achala image on December 28, 1935, people came to the rented residence of then Fumiaki and Tomoji Ito to seek their guidance and help. Their numbers continued to increase exponentially after the young couple founded the Shinnyo Path on February 8, 1936, and it became evident that the budding spiritual community needed a larger place to engage in training. Until this was finally realized with the establishment of Shinchoji on October 6, 1938, the Shinnyo Masters underwent one of the most difficult periods of their lives as they experienced the passing of their eldest son Kyodoin, Shinjo began his training at Daigoji Monastery, and every spare minute was spent on practitioners who continued to visit them for help. In addition to engaging in religious practice in the years leading to the outbreak of World War II, the Shinnyo Masters also had to face the many challenges that came their way from opportunistic members of the spiritual community who attempted to hinder their efforts. Therefore, Shinchoji is imbued with the sincerity of practitioners who came together in oneness with the Shinnyo Master to overcome each hurdle and build their first temple.

On this day, we commemorate the enlightenment of the Buddha. Shakyamuni was born a prince of the Shakya clan near the Himalayas, but he left the palace in search for enlightenment. For 6 years he was a wandering ascetic, subjecting himself to rigorous training. The Prince went into focused meditation under a Bodhi tree with firm resolution that he would not move until he discovered the root of suffering and a path to liberation.

Like the prince, we may encounter obstacles in life such as sadness and hardships. To overcome this, Her Holiness suggest mediating to find strength to overcome each challenge. Let us also remember those who came together to build Shinchoji throughout the years and keep them in our hearts as we endeavour forward. Let’s continue to overcome challenges, hardships and experiences of pain and sadness with a steadfast spirit.

We commemorate the day the Buddha attained enlightenment on December 8^th as the Feast of Enlightenment. The Chinese characters making up the name of the service refer to ‘carrying through the Way’—through awakening.We will have a service broadcast on 8 Dec, 3pm @ Shinnyo-en Singapore
